Could the Second Amendment be the key to understanding?

Art Smith October 5th, 2007

Jonathan Turley’s comments on the Second Amendment are worth reviewing.  It is a good way of thinking about the criticisms of individual rights which can be clouded by misunderstanding the intent of the amendment.  This will be an important discussion point during the coming debates within the Supreme Court.  I caught this one on Bitsblog.

I think it is often easy for us to overanalyze the text in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Bible and miss the (generally) clear, plain, meaning because it doesn’t fit our picture of the world.  This will lead to miserable failure if not watched carefully, and this, I believe, is the core responsibility of the Supreme Court… it will be interesting to see how well it performs in coming months.

Thankfully, the Season is over…

Art Smith October 1st, 2007

The Mets are officially out of it.  It’s sad and unfortunate, considering how well the team performed MOST of the  season.  It amazes me that they could stay in first place just about the entire season, and self-destruct in the last couple of weeks.  And today was really disappointing from the get go… Glavine falling apart in the first inning was really painful.  But I think that the team got complacent, and for that, we got what we deserved.  The good news is that I won’t need to spend the month of October totally consumed with baseball and can focus on other things.  We’ve got next year, right?
