You’re going to hear quite a bit from the left over ‘the death of conservatism’ over the next few weeks. But they’ve got it wrong. I say, what we’ve got is the death of compromised conservatism as espoused by George W Bush, his father, GHW Bush, and by more recently, John McCain.
This morning, we see a post from Helen Valois at Renew America, who calls this ‘conservative conservatism’. I can quibble with the name she chooses, but not her meaning…
What is conservative conservatism? It is a commitment to playing a good defense (or rather — except for the one, brief, shining moment of Governor Palin’s acceptance speech — a pretty flawed defense) when your opponents have gone decisively on the offensive. It is that which John McCain quintessentially represents — the recalcitrant[...]

The major candidates for President are considerably closer in their policies and philosophy than the overwhelming rhetoric may lead you to believe. For some, this really is a hard choice.
It took a while for the conservative base of the Republican Party to get through the grieving process when it became apparent that John McCain was the nominee. The result of that process is a candidate who has managed to reconcile with the base by both making statements that fit the conservative agenda more adroitly (some would say McCain is not exactly honest in this regard), and the addition of a stronger conservative on the ticket in the person of Sarah Palin. McCain professes and hopefully holds to a more conservative leaning on some key social issues, but still tends toward a more liberal approach to fiscal policy. It is[...]

In this weekend’s Wall Street Journal, there is a report of an investment made by Nancy Pelosi and her husband.
They put somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000 into T. Boone Picken’s company, Clean Energy Fuels Corp.
At first blush, the relatively small amount (compared to millions of dollars in assets held by the Pelosis) would make most [...]

It is so easy, especially when you aren’t tightly scripted, to say things that just don’t come out the way you mean them to.
John McCain: When asked what will happen if he can’t convince the American public that the war in Iraq is succeeding, he said “Then I lose.” I don’t have a problem [...]

I’ve got just one little point that I haven’t seen any comment as yet which I noticed while listening to a rebroadcast of last night’s debate between Clinton and Obama in Austin.
There was a question regarding having 2 languages spoken in the US (English and Spanish presumably). Here’s a transcript (courtesy of the Chicago [...]
I want to be sure we’re not too dismissive about this whole debacle with the New York Times piece that showed up on the web yesterday and presumably in the print edition today. Rather, let’s just look at how it compares to some things in the past.
First off, again, I’m not a big fan [...]

The US Senate passed a stimulus package a short while ago. From the Wall Street Journal:
The Senate passed an economic rescue plan that would speed $600 to $1,200 in rebates to most taxpayers and $300 checks to low-income people, including disabled veterans and the elderly. The 81-16 vote capped more than a week of political [...]

According to the WSJ, on fears that the US will experience a recession (perhaps due to the possibility of Ron Paul getting elected president), the major Asian indexes fell anywhere from 4-8%.
Evidently Bush’s stimulus package did not impress. Let’s hope this doesn’t create a circular reaction event (US Markets drop, Asian Markets drop, lather, [...]

From the New York Times:
WASHINGTON — President Bush called Friday for roughly $145 billion in tax relief for individuals and businesses that he said would “provide a shot in the arm” for the economy, while Congressional Democrats, in a rare show of Washington bipartisanship, pledged to work with him to enact a plan quickly.
At first [...]
